Over 3,300 dead in the earthquakes in Venezuela

The death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela at the end of June has risen to 3,342, according to official figures released on Sunday, AFP reports.

That’s an increase from 2,954 dead on Saturday.

The official number of injured has risen from around 16,000 to around 16,700.

Authorities on Sunday buried more than 150 unidentified bodies in a long line of individual graves, witnessed by AFP journalists.

The devastation is enormous after the two earthquakes on June 24 and thousands of people are still missing.

The magnitude of the first earthquake was measured at 7.2, according to the US Geological Survey. The other to 7.5.

The tremors were the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century and occurred within a minute near Morón on the coast.
