German coach Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he will hold official talks with the German Football Association, to discuss the possibility of taking over as coach of the first national team, succeeding resigned coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Nagelsmann had submitted his resignation from his position following the withdrawal of the German national team, which won the world title four times, from the World Cup tournament after losing on penalties to its Paraguayan counterpart. This defeat reinforces the “Machines'” complex of being unable to achieve any victory in the World Cup qualifying rounds since they won the last title in 2014.

In a rapid step, the German Football Association placed the former Liverpool coach as the first and most prominent option to save the national team. The Federation confirmed in an official statement: “With regard to appointing the new coach, the leadership of the German Federation will now seek to open negotiation channels with Jurgen Klopp, who has already shown flexibility and initial readiness to take on this task.”
For his part, Klopp reacted to reports linking him to the leadership of the German Federal Reserve, confirming his serious interest in the position. Sky Sports Germany quoted Klopp as saying that reaching a formal agreement between the two parties is only a matter of “time.”

The obstacle to the Red Bull contract and the penalty clauses
Despite the initial agreement, one obstacle stands out: Klopp’s current professional commitments. Since January 2025, he has held the position of President of Global Football in the Red Bull system, a position that gives him full supervision of the group’s network of clubs, the most prominent of which are: German Leipzig, Austrian Red Bull Salzburg, and American New York Red Bulls.

Although reports indicate that there is a special clause in his contract that allows him to leave if he receives an offer to coach the German national team, Klopp insists on leaving in a friendly manner and in a way that ensures maintaining good relations with his current management.
In this context, Klopp stated: “I have a valid contract with Red Bull, and I naturally respect the contracts concluded. But at the same time, I am very interested in starting these conversations, which must be intense and deep.”
He added: “I also need to talk to my boss, Oliver Mintzlaff, who is someone who cares deeply about the interests of German football. The Red Bull organization must get out of this situation cleanly and legally. It is not that easy for me to simply withdraw.”
A deep crisis and a turning point
German football is currently experiencing the repercussions of a severe crisis following the shocking elimination against Paraguay, which also recorded the first loss for the German national team on penalties in the entire history of its participation in the World Cup finals.
This bitter exit came to bring down the curtain on a dull and unconvincing campaign in the group stage. Despite the strong start of the Nagelsmann team by sweeping the Curacao team with a wide score (7-1) in the first round, the performance declined significantly in the following two matches. The team appeared unconvincingly against Côte d’Ivoire, before losing to Ecuador.

Klopp believes that the current problems facing German football are deeper than being reduced to the person of the resigned coach. He said: “The current dilemmas are not related to Julian Nagelsmann as an individual,” stressing his desire to lead the country towards a correct path at a stage he described as a critical “turning point.”
Klopp continued, saying: “We must now change things radically and philosophically. Whether I am the one who ultimately undertakes this task or someone else, that will not change the fact that these radical changes have become an inevitable and inevitable necessity.”
It is noteworthy that Jurgen Klopp was recently present at the World Championship as a sports analyst for one of the channels, and he had stated immediately after the Paraguay match that the present time was not appropriate to talk about his professional future, before developments accelerated with the German Federation’s statement and his recent statements to the media.
