A typhoon – with the strength of a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the scale – has moved in over the island of Rota in the Pacific Ocean. The US National Weather Service NWS warns of “catastrophic damage and (a) life-threatening situation”.

Strong winds and lashing rain had already hit Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands – which together have around 210,000 inhabitants. Rota has around 1,500 inhabitants.

Typhoon Bavi has had wind gusts of up to 97 meters per second.
