According to the warnings, the use of e-cigarettes within Mexico is not explicitly prohibited, but bringing them into the country is against the law. Travelers who are found in possession of these devices face immediate confiscation by customs authorities, with the possibility of imposing fines that may reach $12,000 (about 9,000 British pounds), and in some cases the penalty may reach eight years in prison.
Cruise and travel companies have issued similar alerts to their customers, stressing that violators may face confiscation of devices, heavy fines, or detention in accordance with Mexican laws.

For its part, the Mexican government justified these measures as part of the framework of protecting public health, especially the health of children and adolescents. “Mexico has become a leading country in protecting the health of children and adolescents,” said Jade Zabicki, head of the Mexican National Commission against Addiction.
