Donald Trump’s so-called peace council is preparing the construction of a “humanitarian zone” in the southern Gaza Strip, reports the AFP news agency.
The pilot project near Rafah will house tens of thousands of “vetted” Palestinians, an anonymous representative of Trump’s council says according to the news agency.
The zone is to be guarded by international soldiers from a newly established so-called stabilization force, ISF, which acts on behalf of the council.
According to AFP’s source, unarmed civilians screened should be able to move in and out as they please.
The plans raise concerns. Grouping civilians into guarded, controlled zones can be equated with forced displacement, warn representatives of non-profit organizations and diplomats spoken to by the news agency.
The newspaper Israel Hayom has previously described the project as a “Hamas-free” zone.
