This summer also looks like it will be tough for the country’s midwives. Many believe that the staffing is not enough, according to a survey from the Healthcare Association.
18 out of 22 departments have answered the survey from the union. 94 percent believe that staffing is not enough this summer. 45 percent assess that the situation is worse than in previous years.
In some cases, patient safety is threatened, the midwives believe. 72 percent state that entire businesses have been closed during the summer.
“This is a clear sign that the system is not working as it should. Midwives exist, but the conditions and the planning are not enough to get the staffing together,” says Sophia Godau, union chairperson of the Nursing Association, in a comment.
Staffing gaps are covered with overtime, extra shifts and changed holiday plans. The situation is felt worst in Västerbotten.
About the survey
The survey was conducted between 25 June and 1 July this year.
The survey was sent out to the National Midwifery Network of the Swedish Medical Association and to the Swedish Medical Association’s department chair. Responses were received from 18 out of 22 possible departments.
