Hamas is preparing to dissolve the body that has ruled the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades, sources said.

The move will pave the way for a technocratic committee to impose civilian rule in war-torn Gaza. An “important” press meeting is to be held later on Monday, according to the Hamas press department.

Since the cease-fire with Israel came into force, Hamas has repeatedly said it is ready to dissolve the rule, but the infected question of the movement’s disarmament has so far come in the way.

The technocratic government that will take over consists of 15 Palestinian representatives appointed last year. The constellation is subordinate to Donald Trump’s so-called peace council, where the American president himself is chairman.

During the ceasefire, Israel has expanded its military presence to now control nearly 70 percent of the Gaza Strip. The deadly Israeli attacks have continued.
