Around 1,100 firefighters are battling in the heat to control a growing wildfire in Portugal.

The fire in the area around Viseu southeast of Porto broke out already on Wednesday. During Saturday, the authorities state that the fire has so far ravaged approximately 10,000 hectares of land.

The fire is being fought by around 1,100 firefighters who are trying to get control of the fire with the help of 380 vehicles as well as eight airplanes and helicopters.

So far, nine people have been injured, two of whom were civilians who received serious injuries.

The hot weather complicates the effort with temperatures around 44 degrees in some places.

Spanish military is assisting in the effort since Portugal requested help from the rest of Europe.

The government has introduced bans for the public to enter forest areas as well as restrictions on the use of certain types of machinery in the countryside, due to the risk of sparks.
