In six months, more than 300 children have either been killed or injured in war-torn Sudan, according to Unicef.
The majority of children have been hit in drone attacks, the UN Children’s Fund stated on Monday. Children are killed and injured in their homes, in markets and on roads.
“Children are caught in a merciless cycle of violence, flight and loss,” says the organization’s Sudan director, Sheldon Yett, in a press release.
Sudan has been plagued by a bloody civil war since April 2023. The war is now raging mainly in Kordofan, Darfur and the Blue Nile.
On Monday, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) condemned the violence in Sudan – including widespread sexual violence – and expressed concern about even worse mass atrocities.
The council orders an urgent investigation into war crimes in hard-hit El-Obeid, which has been surrounded for months by paramilitary RSF fighting Sudan’s regular army.
