The Italian energy company Eni announced the successful start of production from the gas compression project at the Sabratha offshore platform, which it is implementing in partnership with the National Oil Corporation through the Mellitah Oil and Gas Project, in a step aimed at enhancing gas production from the Bahr al-Salam field and supporting energy security in Libya.
The company said that the project includes installing a new compression unit weighing 1,600 tons on the Sabratha platform, equipped with modern pressure lines, with a total capacity of about 440 million cubic feet per day, allowing production to continue despite the natural decrease in pressure in the Bahr Al Salam field.

The project is expected to add about 800 million cubic meters of gas annually, along with quantities of associated condensate, which will contribute to compensating for the natural decline in field production and increasing gas recovery rates.
Eni added that the additional quantities will support electricity production inside Libya, enhance energy security, as well as continue gas exports to Italy via the Greenstream pipeline.
The Sabratha platform is one of the largest offshore oil and gas facilities in Libya, and is located about 110 kilometers from the Libyan coast above the Bahr al-Salam field, in waters about 190 meters deep. The platform includes facilities for separating and treating the produced gas, equipment for well maintenance, in addition to residential facilities that accommodate 120 people and a helicopter landing pad.
The total mass of the platform is about 25 thousand tons, while the height of its structure reaches 202 meters. It also includes a combined dock weighing 12,000 tons, residential facilities weighing 1,800 tons, a well maintenance unit weighing 800 tons, as well as a support for the torch, 117 meters long and weighing 718 tons, while its bases were installed at a depth ranging between 120 and 150 meters below the seabed.
Continuing investments
Eni confirmed that the operation of the project reflects its ability, in cooperation with the National Oil Corporation, to implement complex marine projects on schedule despite operational challenges, noting that the project enhances the durability of the gas infrastructure in Libya and supports the growth of the energy sector in the country.
The company explained that work is also continuing on two strategic projects, namely the Bouri field gas exploitation project, which has entered the connection and operation phase after installing the gas recovery unit, and the Structures A and E project to develop two offshore gas fields.
Eni is the largest international energy company operating in Libya, as it has been active in the country since 1959, and its average production from its share reached about 162 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day during the year 2025, while it is currently implementing three development projects with total investments approaching 10 billion dollars.
