The search continued for 74 hours.
Then Lucas Trejo’s wife and two children were found dead after twin earthquakes in Venezuela.
– Peace be with their souls, writes Trejo’s club Sport Maritimo de La Guaira in a statement.
The Argentinian footballer was in Caracas with his team when strong earthquakes hit the northern coast of Venezuela.
His family, wife Yanina Maranella and their children Aaron and Ainhoa were at home in the apartment building when it collapsed.
“Our house in Playa Grande collapsed. I don’t know anything about my family. Please pray for them and let me know if anyone has seen them. I want to believe they weren’t there.” wrote the 38-year-old on Instagram while participating in the long search operation in the disaster area.
Trejo’s father and brother traveled from Argentina to help firefighters, military personnel and volunteers search the area.
“Today my heart is breaking”
Just over three days later, the centre-back’s family members were found dead.
On social media, the South American soccer world is sending its support.
“Today my heart breaks into a thousand pieces. There are no words that can ease so much pain. I am asking God to give Lucas the strength to bear this unimaginable loss”, writes the Argentinian footballer Edson Tortolero.
On Sunday, Club Sport Maritimo also confirms the deaths.
“We share the grief that overwhelms the player Lucas Trejo after the passing of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and his children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. Peace be with their souls and comfort to Lucas and all his loved ones”, writes the club.
The death toll in Venezuela has been reported to rise to at least 1,430 people and a total of 68,900 are reported to be still missing as search efforts continue, reports New York Post.
