Another eventful WC night.

Harry Kane became historic for England. Scotland’s captain resigned and Congo-Kinshasa faced a huge shock. And it was so close that Sweden actually went out of the WC.

These are the headlines of the night.

Panama–England 0–2

England secured the group victory with the win against Panama – but it was a long way off. It was only after over an hour of play that England broke the deadlock.

Kane was the scorer in the match – he thus became historic. The striker scored his eleventh World Cup goal in his career. He is now England’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer.

Croatia–Ghana 2–1

Croatia secured second place in their group after the win against Ghana. Nikola Vlasic became a big hero with his 2–1 goal.

But despite the loss, Ghana also continues as one of the eight best group threes.

Croatia will face Portugal in the round of 16 and Ghana will face Colombia.

The union captain left immediately

Croatia’s victory meant that Scotland went out of the World Cup already in the group stage. Shortly after it became clear, it was announced that union captain Steve Clarke is leaving the post after seven years.

He took Scotland to the country’s first World Cup in 28 years.

Colombia–Portugal 0–0

The general meeting was excited in advance. And with several offensive stars such as Luis Diaz and Cristiano Ronaldo on the field, it was not so strange.

Congo-Kinshasa–Uzbekistan 3–1

Congo-Kinshasa was a huge disaster. The fact that they managed to beat Uzbekistan was perhaps not a blow.

But not many had expected that they would advance to the round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history.

It was so close that Sweden left

Anthony Elanga scored the 1-1 goal against Japan. We should be grateful for that. Because if that goal had not come and the match had ended 1-0 to Japan – then Sweden would have been eliminated from the WC.

In that scenario, Blågult would now have three points and minus one in goal difference. It had not been enough to become one of the top eight group threes.

South Korea felt it. Namely, they are eliminated from the WC with exactly those numbers.

Inside Blågult: This is how Blågult will shriek against France

A recent episode of Sportbladet’s podcast Inside Blågult has been released. Pontus Wernbloom is back and tells how Sweden will actually succeed in beating France on Tuesday evening.

He criticizes journalists, assesses players and pays tribute to Graham Potter – and much more.
