Pakistan announced that its security forces carried out a ground operation along the border with Afghanistan, killing dozens.
The Associated Press quoted military officials in Pakistan, “The security forces carried out a ground operation based on intelligence information along the Pakistani-Afghan border, followed by precisely calculated strikes that targeted hideouts and safe havens for militants in the border region, resulting in the killing of 29 militants.”
For its part, the Afghan government said that dozens of civilian casualties were caused by Pakistani strikes in eastern Afghanistan.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said – in a statement on the “X” platform today, Monday – that the air strikes targeted the provinces of Paktika, Paktia, and Kunar, and led to the death and injury of dozens of civilians.
Zabihullah condemned the Pakistani military strikes, which he described as a “cowardly act of aggression.”
The operation came a day after an attack by gunmen equipped with firearms and explosives on the regional headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers in the coastal city of Karachi in southern Pakistan.
The operation resulted in the killing of 3 Pakistani security personnel, while the Inspector General of Sindh Province, Jawad Alam Udo, stated that 3 militants were also killed in the attack on the local headquarters of the Sindh Rangers, and a fourth attacker was arrested, which the Pakistani army said was an Afghan citizen, and he was wounded.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar – a splinter faction of the Pakistani Taliban – claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack, in a statement issued last Saturday evening.
