Nuno Mendes scored the second goal for the Portuguese national team against Uzbekistan in the ongoing match between them in Houston, in the second round of Group 11 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in America, Mexico and Canada.
The goal came from a powerful, direct shot from Mendes from a direct free kick in the 17th minute, strengthening his team’s lead, for which star Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first goal in the sixth minute.

Mendes became the fourth defender to score a goal for Portugal in the World Cup, as Beto was the first defender to score for the team in the World Cup, against America in the 2002 edition in South Korea and Japan, while Pepe came after him, who scored in the 2018 and 2022 editions, then Rafael Guerrero, who scored against Switzerland in the last edition in Qatar.
Portugal started its campaign in Group 11, which also includes Colombia, with a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
