The Senegalese national team is entering the 2026 World Cup competitions amid exceptional circumstances imposed by visa restrictions, after large numbers of its fans were unable to travel to the United States to support the team in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Secretary-General of the Senegalese Football Federation, Abdullah Sow, confirmed that depriving fans of traveling represents an unfortunate matter for the team, but at the same time he stressed that the players are determined to deliver a strong performance and leave a distinctive mark in the tournament despite this obstacle.

Sow explained that the American authorities apply their own laws related to immigration and visas, which has made it difficult for large numbers of Senegalese and Africans who want to support their teams to attend from the stands.
He pointed out that FIFA was aware of these circumstances, stressing that Senegal respects the applicable laws despite their direct impact on the expected public attendance during the team’s matches.
A strong confrontation against France
The Senegal national team will begin its journey in the ninth group stage with an expected confrontation against France, on Tuesday, before meeting the Norway national team in its second match, both of which will be held on American soil.

Coach Bab Tiaw’s players hope to overcome the impact of the crowd’s absence and focus on performance on the field, especially since the team has gained a distinguished reputation over the past years as one of the most capable African teams to surprise adults in world championships.
Fourth participation and ambition continues
The 2026 edition is Senegal’s fourth participation in the World Cup finals, after the team achieved its best achievement in the 2002 edition when it reached the quarter-finals, before repeating its strong presence by reaching the second round in the World Cup in Qatar.
Senegalese Federation officials believe that the team has the necessary capabilities to present a major tournament, benefiting from the experiences of its international players and their ability to deal with pressure.
Abdullah Sow admitted that the team was accustomed to benefiting from the great public support that constituted what was known as “Player No. 12,” noting that the absence of this support would undoubtedly be influential.
However, he stressed that the presence of the Senegalese and African communities in the United States will give the team a degree of support, adding that the results of the matches are ultimately decided inside the green rectangle and not in the stands.
The African Cup of Nations file does not occupy the focus
In another context, controversy still exists over the last African Cup of Nations title, after the final witnessed exciting events that ended with the title being withdrawn from Senegal against the backdrop of sanctions related to the events that accompanied the final match.
Although the case continues before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Senegalese Federation officials confirmed that their full focus is currently on the World Cup, expressing their confidence in obtaining a fair decision upon the final decision on the appeal.
The Senegalese national team is counting on the experience of its star and captain, Sadio Mane, along with a group of players with international experience, in order to lead the team towards a successful participation in the world championship.
The Senegalese fans hope, despite the difficulty of attending from the stands, that their team will continue writing new chapters of achievements and prove once again its ability to compete with the top teams in the largest international football forum.
