Although most Gazans have come to rely on bicycles for their transportation within the areas of the Gaza Strip, the running out of spare parts for these bicycles, and the rise in their prices, if any, increase their suffering and hinder their movements.
The owner of a bicycle repair shop told Al Jazeera Mubasher that spare parts for bicycles are not available, and if they are found, their price is astronomical, as half of one piece reached 10 shekels (about 2.7 dollars) and more.
According to this citizen, the prices of various spare parts have risen unreasonably. Some of them reached 100 shekels (about 27 dollars) and 300 shekels (about 81 dollars), yet they are not available.
Bicycle users and repairmen suffer due to the difficulty of finding transportation, and the citizen himself says that the suffering is increasing, because people depend on bicycles due to the lack of other means of transportation.
For his part, another man who owns a bicycle shop complains of running out of spare parts, and says that the prices available are skyrocketing. The price of a piece that was once priced at 1 shekel (about 0.27 dollars) has become 6 shekels (about 1.6 dollars), and what was 4 shekels (about 1.1 dollars) has increased in price to more than 100 shekels (about 27 dollars), if available.
Alternatives to customer service
The owners of bicycle repair shops did not surrender to the current situation, but rather invented other alternatives, such as dividing the spare part into two halves. The owner of a bicycle repair shop says that they are forced to help customers to the best of their abilities.
A bicycle owner enumerated the problems they face on rough roads that lead to the bicycle becoming worn out, and this affects the health of the driver. For his part, this driver confirms that bicycle spare parts are not available, and the person is forced to search for them throughout the sector and often cannot find them, and if he does find them, their price is astronomical.
Another citizen, who also repairs bicycles, describes the lives of Gazans as a tragedy, and in turn complains about the running out of spare parts and their high prices, if any. The people who spoke to Al Jazeera directly call on the competent authorities to intervene to solve this crisis affecting the repairman and the customer, considering that bicycles have become an alternative to other means of transportation.
In light of the Israeli occupation authorities continuing to prevent the entry of fuel needed to operate cars, the people of the Gaza Strip succeeded in adapting bicycles to be a tool of steadfastness. Bicycles have become a means of transportation and a job opportunity to deliver orders to homes and tents, despite the difficulty of repairing them and the lack of necessary spare parts for them.
Ghazyoun says that bicycles have become an easier and cheaper means of transportation, and that their use includes all age groups.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications in Gaza announced that the Strip is facing a severe crisis in transportation and public transportation, as a result of the widespread Israeli destruction of road networks and vehicles, in addition to the continuing severe fuel shortage.
