List – here you will find this year’s events
CHRONICLE. During the summer, open-air cinemas are organized in many places in the country – and maybe something will be organized where you live too. See here for tips!
You never regret an outdoor cinema, regardless of what is shown.
In the film context, there are (at least) two things you should always take the chance to do if the opportunity arises: to go to a silent film with live music, and to go to an outdoor cinema. In both cases, it applies completely regardless of what is shown.
Now, unfortunately, there aren’t many live-accompanied screenings in Sweden, but it’s high season for outdoor cinema – and it’s also usually free. Here are some tips on where, how and when.
From July 29 to August 29, for example, at least 80 village farm associations across the country will set up canvases on piers, meadows and dance floors, or stretch them between trees and against house walls. Carry out chairs and benches and sell popcorn. For general information on dates, times and locations: bygdegardarna.se.
The castle forest becomes a cinema
In Gothenburg there are various options. As early as 10–11 July, for example, the Big Crowd Factory transforms the Azalea Valley in Slottsskogen into a cinema with two days of films, food trucks and music quizzes, among other things.
August 13-15, the Way Out West festival runs program points with screenings at various locations in town, and Gothenburg’s film festival arranges outdoor cinema as usual. This year, the latter’s Open Air has also grown into a two-day mini-festival with three films, DJ sets and live performances. August 21-22. (Note: This requires reservations for the free tickets.)
In Malmö, during the period 4–23 July, Panora organizes screenings at various locations in the city in collaboration with Malmö Sommarscen, and at one of the screenings, the best of both worlds also meets when the horror classic “Nosferatu” is shown with live jazz by Cabinet Quartet.
In Stockholm, the rooftop bar Stockholm Under Stjärnorna sets up its outdoor cinema on the terrace during the month of August and shows five films with a music theme, and the Stockholm Film Festival organizes its well-attended outdoor screenings in Rålambshovsparken for the 36th year in a row.
This year also with the feature Secret Cinema, where you don’t know which film is being shown until it starts rolling. August 12–16.
Bring warm clothes
There are many more out in the country! Keep your eyes open for what’s happening where you live, and if you’re lucky enough to find a screening near you: bring warm clothes, a picnic and (low) brass chairs or blankets to sit on. Or wrap yourself in. After all, we live in Sweden.
If you don’t have anything officially arranged nearby, pull out a small bright projector and a white sheet or any wall and run for yourselves.
They say that the only funerals you regret are the ones you didn’t go to. This also applies to outdoor cinema.
