Jelena Rybakina, 27, was one of the favorites at Wimbledon.

But now she is out of the game after a crushing loss in the third round.

As usual, Rybakina was one of the aspirants to win the historic grand slam tournament.

It would be strange otherwise.

She won Wimbledon in 2022 and is the current world number two, but the fact is that in the two grass tournaments before Wimbledon she had faltered.

And it continued into Wimbledon.

Against the Belgian Elise Mertens, ranked 27 in the world, it took a cross stop in the third round.

“Speechless”

Mertens fought home the first set and won it after the tiebreak with 7–6 (7–4). In the second set, it was much more straight.

Mertens took it home comfortably with 6–1 and sailed on in the tournament after one of the absolute biggest successes of his career.

– I am speechless. I am very happy that I managed to win the first set, she says in the victory interview and continues:

– It is definitely one of the biggest victories in my career.
