NEW YORK. Now it’s official: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are married.
Fans lined up for hours outside the arena in New York to catch a glimpse of the star-studded party.
– It’s like a real romcom, says Megan Rasmussen, 42.
One by one, the dark-tinted cars slid in Madison Square Garden.
On the other side of the street, fans, photographers and curious people pressed New York-living against the picket fence in the heat. Every now and then they cheered when they caught sight of a familiar face making their way to the arena.
– Jason! Jason!
The shouts rose when the actor Jason Sudeikis appeared in a coat and showed the guards that he was on the guest list.
At the front of the roadblocks scouted Megan Rasmussen42, from Florida, with his eyes fixed on the caravan of black SUVs.
– I have five daughters who are obsessed with Taylor Swiftand I thought: I get to be their eyes and ears this weekend, she says.
For her and other fans outside, it was for a long time impossible to know what was actually happening inside the arena.
The wedding between Taylor Swift, 36, and Travis Kelce36, in New York had for several days been surrounded by speculation and great secrecy. No one even knew if this was where it would end.
But during the Friday evening, the answer finally came.
Pink signs were lit around the entire arena with the text “JUST&T MARRIED” – a play on the couple’s initials. Shortly after, the Swift camp confirmed that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have married inside the arena.
According to information from Swift’s team, the wedding was officiated by none other than the comedian and actor Adam Sandlerwhich the couple has known since before. Swift and Kelce wore Christian Dior Haute Couture during the celebration.
Few other details were leaked, as guests were reportedly required to hand over their cellphones and sign confidentiality agreements.
But according to Page Six shall Gigi Hadid be part of the bridal party. On Friday, the model was seen outside Madison Square Garden with her boyfriend Bradley Cooper, writes E! News. Hadid wore a sparkly pink dress, while Cooper arrived in a classic tuxedo.
Even the actor Dakota Johnson is said to have appeared, wearing a black asymmetric dress.
According to People also have Lena Dunham, Oath Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn seen in connection with the celebration. Also Taylor Swift’s childhood friend Abigail Anderson has been seen at the premises.
Travis Kelce’s podcast producer for “New Heights” is also on hand. On Instagram he has shared pictures from the back seat of a taxi on the way to the celebration.
Megan Rasmussen stood at the arena for several hours. Although visibility was minimal, she managed to rack up several celebrity sightings.
On her mobile phone, she shows a blurry picture of Hugh Grant. She also lists the artist Benson Boone and teammates of Travis Kelce whom she saw pass.
She herself laughs at how much she has learned about American football since the pop queen and the sports star started dating in 2023.
– Back then I knew nothing about American football. I didn’t even know who the Kansas City Chiefs were or who Travis Kelce was, she says.
However, she has been a fan of Swift for 20 years – almost half her life. For Megan, the wedding is therefore more than a celebrity party. It’s the next chapter in a love story that she and other fans have followed, song by song.
– It’s like a real romcom. She couldn’t have written it better herself. Travis went on her “Eras Tour” with a hope and a dream to meet her – and it worked.
Much about the wedding and the celebration is still unknown.
Inside Madison Square Garden, the venue must have been transformed into something completely different from the sports and concert arena New Yorkers recognize. Ahead of the wedding, artificial trees, branches and flower decorations were seen being carried in. Anonymous sources have described the environment as a “fairytale garden”.
Super fan Lindsey Perrin38, had driven twelve hours from Indianapolis with the children Eliza8, and Charlie6, to be close to the wedding.
– We haven’t seen anything other than a few black cars, but we’re here for the atmosphere, she says.
She did not expect to see the bride. But she hopes for more party guests.
– We might sneak out at four tomorrow morning and come back to see if we can catch a glimpse of the drunk guests staggering home after the party, she says and laughs.
A few meters away had 15-year-olds Mike Bodzar from Slovakia climbed up for a better view. He hadn’t really planned to end up in the middle of the most talked about celebrity wedding of the year.
– It was just a funny coincidence that I am here during the wedding. Now I just stand here and wait to see if I see anything, he says.
The sisters Muirin and Keira Russell14 and 18 years old, were not as convinced about the choice of location.
– I would never want to get married in an arena, says Keira.
At the same time, she understands why Madison Square Garden might have been a reasonable choice for Taylor Swift: security is high and visibility is minimal. For the sisters, it was still big to be there.
– We grew up with her music, so she is an obvious part of our lives, says Keira.
She smiles.
– It will be exciting to hear how married life will sound on an album.
But not everyone outside the arena was as excited.
Marnie Halasa stood out in the crowd.
She was dressed as a caricature of the upper class: a huge cigarette, fake banknotes around her neck and a sign with the text: “Somehow I’m not on the A-list”. With the protest group Revolution is Sexy, she wanted to shine a light on the income gaps in the city.
– Celebrities have fantastic lives, but it’s very difficult for ordinary people to get that kind of access, she says.
She emphasizes that she is not against the wedding itself.
– If people want to get married, that’s perfectly fine. But Madison Square Garden is an interesting choice for a wedding. It feels more like a PR trick.
For Halasa, it is above all the abundance that catches the eye.
– People are really having a hard time now. Rents in New York are rising sharply. Having such an extravagant wedding means that they belong to a class that is very disconnected from most of society.
She herself did not expect to enter.
– I am not on the A-list, and I will never be on the A-list. It’s a big club, and you’re not in it.
Towards evening, rain and thunder moved in over Manhattan.
Inside the arena, the party continued well into the wee hours. Outside, fans began to disperse after the confirmation that Swift and Kelce were married.
Shortly thereafter, the Empire State Building shone a blue glow over the city.
“Her something blue,” wrote the skyscraper’s social media account, a nod to the wedding tradition of wearing something blue.
