Writer and author Pernilla Ericson advises on the gems among newly published paperbacks, according to the motto something for everyone.

Lucia is dead

Katarina Wennstam

DETECTIVE STORY Superstition and harsh views of women are two major themes in Wennstam’s exciting and well-written crime novel, which takes place at the end of the 19th century. A valley hill has disappeared, she worked at Skansen and attracted attention with her beauty. But there were also rumors about her. The case leads private detective Fredrika down into Stockholm’s darkest corners, and onto dangerous roads. A great merit of the series is the depiction of the conditions for the women – and how they gradually begin to enter the domains of men.

Tell everything

Elizabeth Strout
Bromberg’s

Translation: Helena Hansson

NOVEL “My God, what lives people live” exclaims one of the characters. Here is a gem of a novel to immerse yourself in. Confidential conversations and intricate relationships form an undulating web that carries the plot forward and not, as one might think, the mystery of a woman’s death. There are a number of characters to keep track of – Strout has characters from previous books meet in the fictional small town of Crosby in Maine. I am most fascinated by the charged relationship between lawyer Bob Burgess and author Lucy Barton.

NOVEL Grandma Mirijam has died and in the grief the question is also raised: what will happen to the cabin in the Karlskrona archipelago? The summer cottage that was the gathering point for the family. Now there is a strong drive both to sell and to keep it. Old grievances and sorrows bubble to the surface, and relationships are challenged. The author has captured a scenario that is the reality of many families in crisis, and mixes humor with blackness in an engaging novel.

White shadows

DETECTIVE STORY It begins dramatically among clubs and cuts, with a call to an alarm about many injured. Motorboats in violent collision, a wedding party in distress. What has led to this? It will be a busy season for sea rescuer Annika Linder and her colleagues, in a relationship-driven suspense novel where dark family secrets are revealed in sun-sparkling archipelago environments. A well-written page-turner that makes me want to stay on land…

CV – The course of life

Sissela Kyle
Norstedt’s

MEMOIRS Few Swedish actors and comedians have such breadth as Sissela Kyle and it’s nice to be able to join her on the journey, all the way from growing up in Partille. She is an effective storyteller, and depicts both her way into the cultural world and society’s change over the years: from solidarity to self-interest. She is ajar at the door to family life and dark moments mix – of course! – with large portions of humor. It is compelling reading, which also sharpens general education about cultural Sweden.
