Egypt beat Australia in the last 16 of the World Cup.
Australia’s goalkeeping moves didn’t help.
A nation would win a World Cup knockout match for the first time. But it took penalties to decide whether it would be Australia or Egypt.
It became Egypt.
Australia captain Tony Popovic attempted a late move at the end of the 1–1 extra-time draw.
Popovic replaced goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who had been playing well. Instead, he opted for the experienced Matthew Ryan in the penalty shootout.
Ryan failed to save any penalty.
The 34-year-old threw himself early on a couple of the penalties and gave Egypt’s player the chance to shoot in the other corner. It was used, among other things, by superstar Mohamed Salah, who chipped his penalty in the middle of the goal.
For Australia, Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed out.
In the round of 16, Egypt will face the winner of the round of 16 between Argentina and Cape Verde.
