Eight Buddhist monks were killed and more than 10 injured, Thursday, after a child rammed a religious procession into a religious procession in northeastern Thailand, according to police.
The procession, consisting of 35 monks and five followers of the Buddhist religion, was traveling on a road in Mukdahan County as part of a pilgrimage trip, when the accident occurred, according to what local police chief Pirog Tayvotsa told reporters, noting that the person responsible for the accident was an 11-year-old child.
According to official authorities, five monks were killed immediately, while three others died later in the hospital. Ten other injured people are still receiving treatment in hospital.
Surveillance camera images published by the local rescue association showed the monks walking in a single line on the side of the road before the truck collided with them.
The police reported that the child drove his parents’ vehicle without permission, before he lost control and ran over the monks. She also reported that the monks told her that they saw the vehicle losing balance before it left the road and collided with them.
The police confirmed that the authorities confiscated the truck to subject it to a technical examination aimed at determining the causes of the accident. They also confirmed that the authorities summoned the child’s parents to determine who was responsible for supervising the truck, in preparation for initiating legal procedures accordingly.
