The founder and former CEO of Apple, the late Steve Jobs, opposed the idea of launching a MacBook laptop that uses a touch screen, and described the idea as “very bad” from an engineering standpoint.
But it seems that Apple’s new management has decided to move away from Jobs’ approach and keep up with what other companies are offering in the laptop sector, as a report by the American technical website Engadget indicates that the company intends to launch a laptop with an OLED touch screen under the name “MacBook Ultra” soon.
The first reports about the “MacBook Ultra” appeared in 2023, and have continued to appear continuously since that moment, as the company intends to offer two sizes of the device: 14 inches and 16 inches.
The device carries a variety of leading features that Apple computers have, in addition to the presence of a touch screen, which is the most prominent feature about this device.
Thinner and lighter design
The “MacBook Ultra” comes in a new design from Apple, which is thinner and lighter than all of its other devices, according to the “Ingadget” report, in addition to the fact that the device comes with a completely different design from the usual “MacBook” devices.

Apple is replacing the notch in the screens of current MacBook computers with a small hole for the front camera, which is consistent with the improvements that the company has added to its voice assistant, “Siri,” according to a report by the American technical website “Apple Insider.”
The company also worked to improve the computer’s hinge to be able to withstand the vibrations resulting from using the new touch screen, according to the report.
Optimize macOS for touch screen
The Engadget report confirms that Apple has worked to improve the Mac OS operating system to suit touch screens, by adding a new special menu that appears when you touch the screen.

The new screen also supports multi-touch technologies in a way that mimics the iPad and iPhone screens, so it is expected to have a wide range of uses, and the screen will also support the Apple smart pen.
Performance and battery
Apple intends to use the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors with the first generation of the new MacBook Ultra, but the story is different with the second generation of computers that will be released next year.
Next year, the company will abandon offering the leading categories of “M6” processors, so we will not see “M6 Pro” or “M6 Max”, and instead will offer “M7” processors.
It is expected that Apple will provide an improvement in the battery life of the new computers as a result of the use of “OLED” screens that do not consume energy in a similar way to regular screens.
The price of the “MacBook Ultra” cannot be predicted, especially after Apple increased the prices of its latest products, but the report indicates that the prices of the computer will exceed the prices of the company’s currently available models, which means that the price of the device may exceed the $4,000 barrier.
Regarding the launch date of the new device, reports vary in their expectations, as some reports believe that Apple will launch it before the end of this year, while others indicate that it will be launched early next year.
