Italian Marcell Jacobs, 31, struck with a super race in Austria.
Only Usain Bolt, 39, has run 100 meters faster.
– I am very happy, says Jacobs.
Marcell Jacobs has really found his way back to top form.
The 31-year-old won the event in Eisenstadt, Austria, in a time of 9.67 seconds. It is his fastest time ever and the third best time ever.
Only the legendary Usain Bolt has run faster (2009 and 2012).
– I am very happy because I am getting better every race. Sure there was a lot of tailwind here, but throughout history only Bolt has run faster than this time. I am really happy to have achieved such a time, says Jacobs European Athletics.
Faster than the European record
It is precisely the strong tailwind (+4.1 meters per second) that means that Jacob’s time will not count as an official record.
The permitted tailwind for record times is +2.0 meters per second. Otherwise, this evening Jacobs would have broken his European record of 9.80 seconds.
He won the competition ahead of Britain’s Romell Glave and South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk.
In the 100 meters, Jacobs has, among other things, Olympic gold (2020) and several European Championship golds (2022 and 2024).
Fastest times in 100 meters (regardless of wind)
1. Usain Bolt, 9.58 seconds (+0.9 meters per second)
2. Usain Bolt, 9.63 (+1.5)
3. Marcell Jacobs, 9.67 (+4.1)
4. Tyson Gay, 9.68 (+4.1)
5. Obadele Thompson, 9.69 (+5.0)
5. Usain Bolt, 9.69 (0.0)
5. Tyson Gay, 9.69 (+2.0)
