Ecuador was in desperate need of a win in its last match in Group Five yesterday, Thursday, after its loss to Ivory Coast and its unexpected draw with Curacao, which is participating in the tournament for the first time.
The South American team conceded an early goal against Germany, but came back from behind with a strong rebound to seal the victory, sparking crowd celebrations in the New York New Jersey stadium, which was packed with fans.
Germany had already secured qualification at the top of the group. While Ivory Coast ranked second after its 2-0 win over Curacao.
Ecuador qualified among the eight best third-placed teams to advance to the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the second time, after reaching the round of 16 in the 2006 tournament held in Germany.
