Argentine Sebastian Becasese stepped down from his position as coach of Ecuador with a heavy heart, after his team lost 2-0 to Mexico in the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup early on Wednesday, saying that he would have liked to continue in his position but failed to fulfill his promises.

Although Ecuador entered the knockout stage with renewed momentum after its impressive victory over Germany after falling behind, it was unable to overcome Mexico’s fast start and impeccable defensive record.

“Our contract with the World Cup has ended,” Becassisi said after the loss at the Estadio Azteca, where the noise of the fans was deafening. “I don’t think we were able to achieve the achievement that we promised, to make this edition of the World Cup the best ever. Today it is my turn to say goodbye.”

He added: “This is why I had to leave. I wanted to continue, because what I received from the players and management justified the possibility of that. But I understand how things are going and this is painful, but I think the decision was clear.”

Bekasisi admitted that his team felt frustrated by the energy of the Mexican national team, which dominated the first 45 minutes.

He said: “They outperformed us in the first half.”

Ecuador’s performance improved after the break, and they had more possession of the ball in an attempt to get back into the match, but Mexico’s defense held strong.

Bekasisi added: “We fought fiercely, but we were unable to score the goal that would have given us a morale boost.”

Despite the pain of exclusion, the Argentine coach chose to focus on the deep bond that developed between him, his team and the country during their journey.

When asked about the legacy he will leave behind, Bekasisi praised his team. He said: “The legacy goes back to the players, because they were the youngest team in the history of Ecuador.”

He added: “I have no complaints, just a feeling of gratitude towards the people and the players. I received a lot of sincere gratitude and affection. The players gave me two wonderful hours after the match, and that is what will stay with us.”
