On a night to forget during the 2026 World Cup, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa decided to withdraw goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at the end of the first half against Spain, following a series of defensive lapses that put the team in a critical position.
This decision came after the Estudiantes goalkeeper committed a grave error in dealing with a shot by Spanish player Alex Baena, which caused Uruguay to concede the opening goal in the match in the final round of Group Eight.

According to Opta, this is Muslera’s third lapse in the current tournament that led to direct goals, and it is a negative record that no goalkeeper has ever recorded since these statistics began being documented in 1966.
Television scenes showed the state of tension and anger that gripped the veteran goalkeeper after the goal, as he was seen shouting angrily after the ball escaped from his hands and into the net.
Bielsa quickly intervened at halftime to make a tactical substitution and prevent any further lapses by Muslera, as he brought on goalkeeper Sergio Rochette instead of him in an attempt to remedy the situation, which is what actually happened as Uruguay did not concede another goal, and the match ended in a 1-0 loss.
This fall came at a very sensitive time for the Uruguay national team, as the team was required to achieve a victory over Spain to maintain its chances of qualifying from Group H, after “La Celeste” had settled for a draw in its previous two matches against the Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia teams.
This is the first time that Uruguay has substituted its goalkeeper in a World Cup match since substitutions were allowed in Mexico 1970.
