“Unforgivable mistakes.” Tunisia’s coach Lamouchi criticizes his players after Sweden’s five-point win sports

Tunisia’s French national team coach, Sabri Lamouchi, did not try to mitigate the impact of the heavy defeat that the “Eagles of Carthage” suffered against Sweden, with a score of 5-1, in the opening of their World Cup campaign in 2026. The Tunisian national team coach described the loss as very painful, especially since it came in the first match of the World Cup, considering that starting like this represented a strong blow to the team.

Lamouchi said during the press conference after the match: “It is a difficult loss. It is painful. Starting the tournament with such a heavy loss is really difficult.”

Despite the heavy result, Lamouchi stressed that his team was well aware of the extent of the threat posed by the Swedish team on the offensive level, but it did not succeed in reducing its danger on the field. He added: “We knew the quality of the Swedish team. With the presence of two world-class Swedish strikers.”

However, Lamouchi refused to attribute the defeat solely to the strength of the Swedish team, stressing that Tunisia contributed greatly to the complexity of its mission due to the mistakes committed by the players during the various periods of the match.

The coach said clearly: “We made too many mistakes,” a phrase he repeated more than once during his speech, confirming his conviction that individual lapses were the decisive factor in the outcome of the match.

Lamouchi believed that his team showed some positive indicators after returning from the locker room, as the performance improved relatively and signs of reaction appeared from the players, but new mistakes quickly returned the match to the scenario that the Swedish team wanted.

Lamouchi, who took charge before the start of the World Cup, stressed that this is not the time to surrender or look for justifications, stressing that the national team is required to show a strong personality during the upcoming matches.

He said at the conclusion of his statements: “We have our pride and dignity. We need to respond. We have to appear better.”

After this difficult start, the Tunisian team is required to achieve a positive result in the remaining two matches in Group Six against Japan and the Netherlands if it wants to maintain its chances of qualifying for the next round.
