On Wednesday, the Spanish Football Federation suspended Real Zaragoza’s Argentine goalkeeper, Esteban Andrada, for 13 matches after he punched a Huesca player in the second division of football.

The Federation’s Disciplinary Committee said in a statement that the Argentine international and his club will also be fined, after he was first expelled and then “assaulted” Huesca player Jorge Pulido during the second division derby last Sunday.

Andrada was imposed on a 12-match suspension due to the punch itself, while the first red card results in an automatic one-match suspension, which means the end of his season, in a severe blow to Zaragoza’s hopes in its struggle to avoid relegation.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper, loaned from Monterrey, Mexico, pushed Pulido to the ground, and the referee showed him a second yellow card.

Then Andrada lost his temper and rushed to hit Pulido, which sparked a fight on the field in stoppage time.

“The truth is that I am very, very sorry for what happened,” Andrada said after the match.

He added, “This is not a good image for the club, nor for the fans, and certainly not for a professional player like me. For that, I am very sorry.”

Huesca goalkeeper Dani Jiménez and Zaragoza player Dani Tassende were also sent off following the fight, in a match that ended with the hosts Huesca winning 1-0. Jimenez was suspended for 4 matches, and Tasinde for two matches.

The Zaragoza club said in a statement on Sunday: “We witnessed scenes that were not appropriate for this sport, and that should never have happened.”
