The number of victims of a collision between two passenger trains near the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, has risen to 14 dead and 84 injured, according to what the country’s state railway company announced on Tuesday.
The accident occurred yesterday evening, Monday, near Bekasi Timur station, about 25 kilometers from the Indonesian capital, when a long-distance train collided with the last car of a suburban train, according to what local police reported.
Reuters quoted an eyewitness as saying that rescue teams separated the two trains from each other, and rescue personnel were seen using tools to cut the metal of the carriages to reach the survivors.
Earlier Tuesday morning, Anna Purba, spokeswoman for the train operating company in Indonesia, said that the accident resulted in 7 deaths and 81 injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Committee in Indonesia announced the opening of an investigation into the accident, and the Indonesian Railway Operating Company announced today the cancellation of passenger train trips due to the accident.
Local line trains are among the busiest in Jakarta, which is classified as the most populous city in the world. Transport accidents are also common in Indonesia, as a collision in West Java province in 2024 killed 4 people and injured dozens.
