From within a headquarters that lacks the most basic necessities for work in Gezira State in central Sudan, the National Union of the Physically Disabled organized a deliberative session that discussed the conditions of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face in the areas of education, work, transportation, and basic services, amid demands to activate laws and provide the necessary support for this segment.
In this context, Manhal Majed, a member of the union and a rickshaw driver, reviewed her experience as a woman with disabilities who was able to overcome social and economic challenges.
She stressed that the union suffers from weak support and the absence of basic services, and that people with disabilities do not ask for charity, but rather for job opportunities and the rights guaranteed to them by law.
Hind Suleiman, a member of the Union, touched on the suffering of women with disabilities and the difficulty of their access to education and work due to the lack of preparation of public institutions and facilities, noting that the Union House itself is unusable and lacks the most basic needs.
Poor qualification opportunities
For his part, Ezz El-Din Al-Abd Al-Sadiq, President of the Agricultural Cooperative Society for the Physically Disabled, explained that “the association, which was established five months ago to create production and economic development opportunities for the disabled, faces challenges related to land, irrigation, and financing,” calling on organizations to support its agricultural projects.
Samer Muhammad, one of those injured during the ongoing war, highlighted the challenges faced by young people with disabilities, noting that their conditions are becoming more difficult in light of the weak opportunities for rehabilitation and support, and the absence of programs that contribute to their integration into the labor market.
People with disabilities in Gezira State face accumulated challenges that have been exacerbated by the repercussions of war and economic conditions, amid demands directed at government agencies and humanitarian organizations to enforce laws and provide an environment that guarantees them a decent life and active participation in society.
