Today, Monday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on his first official visit since the overthrow of the Assad regime at the end of 2024, in response to an invitation from his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shaibani.
The Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported that the Syrian Foreign Minister received an Iraqi delegation headed by his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, to discuss ways of cooperation in all fields and strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the minister is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior Syrian officials, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and Syria, and develop joint cooperation in various political, security, economic, and commercial fields, in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries.
She added that the discussions will address the latest developments in regional and international situations, and ways to enhance coordination and consultation between the two countries regarding common challenges, as well as discussing efforts aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region, and developing bilateral cooperation mechanisms in a way that achieves mutual interests and supports regional stability.
Hussein said that Iraq believes that dialogue and cooperation between the countries of the region represent the basis for consolidating regional security, enhancing stability, and serving common interests.
On June 10, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi sent a letter to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in which he stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and expanding areas of security and economic coordination.
The recent period witnessed the gradual reopening of a number of major land crossings between Iraq and Syria, following the fall of the Assad regime and the political changes witnessed in Syria, paving the way for a new phase of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The factions of the Syrian revolution entered the capital, Damascus, on December 8, 2024, announcing the overthrow of the regime of Bashar al-Assad (2000-2024), who inherited power from his father, Hafez al-Assad (1971-2000).
