Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, revealed that the spread of Hanta virus cases has decreased, as 680 cases have been identified in 33 countries.
Ghebreyesus explained – during a press conference today, Wednesday – that 44 of these cases have completed the isolation period, while the rest continue precautionary measures until the beginning of next July, indicating that if no new infections are recorded by July 2, the end of the spread of infection will be announced.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization confirmed the continuation of research work to understand the origin of the virus, through coordination with laboratories in 31 countries and analyzing samples in Switzerland, with the aim of developing future vaccines.
He also thanked Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, international leaders, and ship crews that cooperated in containing the spread.
The situation in Sudan
Regarding the Sudanese issue, Ghebreyesus described the humanitarian situation in the city of El Obeid and North Kordofan as “deteriorating,” noting that the armed conflict led to the collapse of health services.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization said that the organization informed the UN Security Council of reports about critical health cases, as the Kordofan region recorded 713 cases of cholera and 53 deaths, stressing that the organization’s teams are currently working to monitor water quality, conduct urgent examinations, and provide the necessary treatments for those infected.
In the context of financing the health system, the Director-General of the World Health Organization warned of the danger of continuing great pressures facing health systems around the world. Stressing that the international response is still insufficient to face the current challenges.
