Amnesty International said that four months have passed since the US air strike that targeted the Shajara al-Tayyiba Primary School in the city of Minab, Iran, killing more than 150 people, including 120 children, without achieving accountability or revealing the truth to public opinion.
Amanda Klassing, National Director of Government Relations and Advocacy Activities at the US branch of the organization, noted that this raid was “the deadliest attack on civilians in modern history,” in terms of the number of casualties, she said. However, the American authorities were not close to providing answers about why it occurred and who was responsible for it.
Clasing wondered about the justification for this delay, and stressed the need to ensure transparency and achieve accountability for the families of the victims.
According to Amnesty International’s statement, US President Donald Trump makes contradictory statements about the attack, while the Pentagon refrains from providing Congress with information, at a time when lawmakers and public opinion are increasingly dissatisfied with the repeated response that the incident is still under investigation.
The organization said, “The truth we know is that the US military was responsible for the death of 150 people in an attack with Tomahawk precision-guided missiles on a school crowded with children,” stressing that the United States should have known that the building was a school and not a military target, and that the Pentagon possessed intelligence capabilities that were supposed to enable it to verify this information and make a decision not to attack the school.
The statement indicated the absence of additional information regarding the possibility of using artificial intelligence in the targeting decision, pointing out that the CEO of Anthropic said that he did not know whether his company’s artificial intelligence programs had been used to select targets for American attacks in Iran, and he blamed a “human” who makes the final targeting decisions.
The organization stated that the attack on the Minab School is the latest example of the US military killing civilians since Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took office and decided last year to neglect Pentagon programs concerned with mitigating civilian harm.
She called on the Pentagon to quickly end the investigation and publish its results, ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, and prosecute any person for whom there is sufficient evidence of criminal responsibility for this crime, warning that any action without that would be “a cover-up for a grave violation of international humanitarian law and a betrayal of the victims and survivors.”
