A deadly drone attack has targeted Tigray in Ethiopia. Regime-critical Tigray groups claim that the federal government in Addis Ababa was behind it.

The drone attack took place on Friday in Shiraro, near the border with Eritrea. “The attack led to deaths, injuries and material damage to the Tigray army,” writes the state’s regime-critical militia TPLF in a statement on social networks.

The incident is a warning about the situation between Ethiopia’s central government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s rule and Tigray’s separatist movement TPLF.

During the civil war between the army of the central power and the armed movement of Tigray in 2020-2022, about 600,000 people died in fighting and hardship. A ceasefire agreement has not been fully formalized.

Ahmed has received the Nobel Peace Prize.
