The Guardian newspaper said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of issuing orders to control 70% of the Gaza Strip constitutes a direct threat to any fragile ceasefire in the Strip.
The newspaper added that experts warned that this policy may completely undermine US President Donald Trump’s plans regarding Gaza, as it threatens to create catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the devastated Strip, and may constitute a death sentence for a large number of the population.
As for the New York Times, it quoted Israeli analysts as saying that the escalation of military operations in Gaza may help Netanyahu divert Israeli attention from other internal and external crises, at a time when he is waging a complex political and electoral battle.
Analysts pointed out, according to the newspaper, that the Israeli army faces increasing challenges in Lebanon, especially with the continued attacks by Hezbollah drones, while fears are growing inside Israel that the American-Iranian talks will lead to an agreement that Tel Aviv considers inappropriate for its security interests.
America and Iran
Regarding the Iranian file, the Wall Street Journal said that a number of former American officials and experts doubt the chances of reaching a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, due to the lack of confidence in Tehran’s willingness to reduce its nuclear program in accordance with American demands.
According to the newspaper, one of the most prominent obstacles hindering reaching a settlement is the nature of the decision-making mechanism within Iran, which leaves the United States and its allies in a state of confusion regarding the nature of the Iranian nuclear program and the speed of its development, which leaves the option of American and international sanctions strongly on the table.
Ebola epidemic
In Africa, The Washington Post highlighted growing mistrust in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, coinciding with the spread of allegations and conspiracy theories claiming that the Ebola outbreak is a hoax.
The newspaper quoted officials from relief organizations as saying that some residents have come to believe that the disease is fabricated to achieve financial gain or to control areas rich in minerals.
These officials said this further complicates efforts to combat the epidemic and leads to escalating tension and violence against humanitarian workers.
