Sweden’s first DO, Discrimination Ombudsman, has passed away. The lawyer Peter Nobel was 94 years old.
Peter Nobel was born in 1931 as the great-grandson of Alfred Nobel’s brother Ludvig Nobel. He studied law and first worked as a defense and family law attorney.
Later he became increasingly involved in immigration and asylum matters. On behalf of Amnesty, he investigated allegations of torture in Israel and Syria during the October War of 1971.
In 1986 he became Sweden’s first Discrimination Ombudsman.
– The issue was completely new and it was about highlighting the serious and illegal nature of people being treated badly as a result of their skin color, appearance or origin, he has told TT.
He later became secretary general of the Swedish Red Cross and continued with international work within the UN and the EU.
Peter Nobel passed away after a period of illness, the family informs TT.
