On Wednesday, the Pakistani authorities launched search and rescue operations after losing contact with a Boeing 737 cargo plane off the coast of Karachi, while it was on a flight coming from Sharjah, UAE, with 5 crew members on board.
The Pakistan Airports Authority said that the plane, belonging to K2 Airways, reported a malfunction in the navigation system during its flight, before radar data showed it descending rapidly and changing direction sharply, then contact with it was lost about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
The authority added that search and rescue operations were launched in the Arabian Sea to locate the plane, without announcing yet that it had been found or knowing the reasons for its disappearance.
For its part, the “Flight Radar24” website, which specializes in tracking flights, reported that initial data for the plane showed that it descended and then rose again, before entering a second sudden and sharp descent before losing contact with it.
K2 Airways operates cargo flights inside and outside Pakistan, while data on the Airflights website indicates that the plane was manufactured in 1999, and previously worked in transporting passengers for Aeroflot and Garuda Indonesia before being converted into a cargo plane in 2012.
