On Monday, Reuters quoted two Pakistani sources as saying: Islamabad has begun mediating between the two rival administrations in Libya, one of which is based in the east and the other in the west.
The two Pakistani sources said that the efforts began late last year, and that the two Libyan parties requested Pakistan’s participation. It is not clear to what extent Pakistan is coordinating its efforts with other concerned parties in the region.
According to the sources, these efforts “also received the support of Saudi Arabia, which last year concluded a joint defense agreement with Pakistan.”
This effort, which has not been previously reported, would – if successful – enhance Pakistan’s diplomatic standing.
Pakistan played another pivotal role in mediating between the United States and Iran this year, which the administration of US President Donald Trump has repeatedly praised. One of the Pakistani sources said that the United States is “fully aware” of Islamabad’s efforts regarding Libya.
Over the past months, US-led efforts have emerged to find a diplomatic solution in Libya, which has been divided between two competing administrations since the outbreak of civil war in the years following the NATO-supported uprising in 2011, which overthrew the late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
