The Brazilian government has warned that there is an increasing risk that the United States will resort to military force inside Brazil following Washington’s designation of two criminal groups in Brazil as terrorist organizations.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said in a letter to Parliament: “This classification…can be used to justify cross-border measures against Brazilian institutions.”
He considered that “there is a danger that the United States will resort to the use of military force against national territory.”
Leftist Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva opposed this classification, which the United States believes gives it the right to carry out American interventions against the leaders of these groups anywhere in the world.
Last May, the US government confirmed that the Primero Comando da Capital and Comando Vermilio groups had “illicit networks” extending far beyond Brazil’s borders, and announced their designation as terrorist organizations.
These two organizations mainly carry out drug smuggling operations, and they also have other illegal sources of income in popular Brazilian neighborhoods.
Since his return to the White House in 2025, Donald Trump has begun designating various criminal groups in other countries as terrorist organizations, such as the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico and the Tren de Aragua cartel in Venezuela.
The United States launched deadly attacks against the Tren de Aragua in Venezuela, and also carried out deadly strikes against boats that Washington said belonged to drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, without providing any evidence of this.
In Brazil, the right-wing opposition welcomed Washington’s decision, accusing the government of inaction and complacency as the presidential elections scheduled for October approach.
