The Sudan Doctors Network has warned of a sharp and accelerating deterioration in the humanitarian and health conditions in the areas of West Bara in North Kordofan State, stressing that more than 200,000 people, including more than 20,000 children, are facing tragic conditions as a result of the acute shortage of food and medicine and the outbreak of cholera and measles epidemics.

The network said that field information indicates that more than 100 cases of measles were recorded among children in a number of health centers, in addition to monitoring 45 cases of cholera, in light of a significant decline in health services and a lack of basic medical supplies.

She added that a number of health facilities are now operating without any medical supplies, including Taiba Al-Zaatari Hospital and Umm Kreidem Hospital, in addition to health centers in Al-Shaqila, Ouled Awanah, Umm Saadoun Al-Nader, Umm Duban, Al-Marra, Al-Hajj Al-Lin, Damira Abdo, Al-Kukiti, Al-Qa’a, Umm Heglig, Dweid, Al-Shouq, Umm Ashira, and Al-Nabada.

The network explained that the affected areas include the administrative units of Taiba, Al-Zaatari, Umm Kreidim, Al-Mazroub, Umm Saadoun, Damira, and Al-Hajj Al-Lin, with a total population of more than 200,000 people.

It warned that the continued interruption of medical and food supplies, and the prevention of aid from entering the region, threatens the occurrence of a large-scale humanitarian and health catastrophe that may lead to high death rates, especially among children and the most vulnerable groups.

The Sudan Doctors Network called on the United Nations, humanitarian and relief organizations, and competent health authorities to intervene immediately and urgently to ensure the delivery of medicines, intravenous solutions, vaccines, and medical supplies, in addition to providing food and safe drinking water, to limit the spread of diseases and save the lives of thousands of civilians in the affected areas.

The three states of the Kordofan region (North, West and South) have witnessed fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since last October 25.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is exacerbated by the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has been ongoing since April 2023 due to a dispute over the unification of the military institution, which left tens of thousands dead and about 13 million displaced.
