A San Francisco jury indicted seven demonstrators on charges related to obstructing traffic on the iconic Golden Gate Bridge during a 2024 pro-Palestinian demonstration.
At that time, the United States witnessed widespread protests rejecting the Israeli war of genocide on Gaza, and the protesters demanded an end to Washington’s support for its ally, and the disengagement of universities from companies that support Israel.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement issued yesterday that the jury convicted the seven demonstrators of committing six misdemeanors, including obstructing traffic, refusing to yield while being dispersed by security, and participating in an unauthorized gathering.
The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the most serious charge, which is criminal conspiracy, which means an agreement between two or more people to commit a crime accompanied by an overt act, and could lead to a sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.
Defense lawyers stated that the demonstrators acted out of what they saw as a moral responsibility to oppose the devastation caused by the Israeli war in Gaza.
They said that the demonstrators decided to resort to closing the bridge after other methods, such as writing letters and appealing to members of Congress, failed.
