Lithuania may amend the country’s constitution to lift a ban on stockpiling nuclear weapons, says President Gitanas Nauseda.
“Lithuania is today in a kind of gray zone within the NATO framework,” says Nauseda.
– It would really be disappointing if we were a weak link or a gray area.
The country is looking to bolster its defenses against Russia amid rising tensions along NATO’s eastern flank since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four years ago.
There are no plans to store nuclear weapons in peacetime, says Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas.
– But we must be prepared so that we can act as a deterrent against the background of NATO’s overall deterrence, and protect Lithuania from possible aggression, he says.
