The German Football Museum is currently displaying an exceptional document that sheds light on the early beginnings of one of today’s most prominent football stars. The document is a personal letter written by German playmaker Florian Wirtz on May 28, 2015, when he was only 12 years old, revealing his innocent ambitions and dreams that have today turned into reality on the international scene.

The details of the childhood letter and early ambitions that Wirtz wrote with his own hand when he was a sixth-grade student at the Apte School in the city of Brauweiler, included the details of his simple diary. The child then pointed out his love for the English language and physical education, and his passion for football, which motivated him enthusiastically to play in an age group older than his own the following season.

The message was not devoid of an innocent, human side, as he expressed his temporary annoyance at the distance of some of his friends at school, while maintaining great optimism that things would improve. At the conclusion of his letter, Wirtz clearly arranged his future priorities; Starting from finishing high school and starting a family, all the way to revealing his biggest dream and most prominent goal: “To become a professional football player, and perform at the same level as my idol, Neymar Jr.”

An international career beyond childhood dreams

Years after writing those lines, the former Bayer Leverkusen and current Liverpool star not only achieved his childhood dream, but also surpassed it to become a mainstay in the ranks of the first German national team (Manschaft).

Wirtz began his international career early in September 2021, when he was eighteen years old. His name was quickly etched in the historical records of German football in March 2024, when he scored the fastest goal in the history of the German national team just 7 seconds after the start of a friendly match against the French national team.

The young star crowned his remarkable brilliance with an exceptional participation in the European Championship (Euro 2024), hosted by his country, where he cut the ribbon for the tournament’s goals by scoring the opening goal against Scotland.

Today, Wirtz, along with his colleague Gamal Musiala, forms a strong attacking duo that carries the hopes of the German fans in the 2026 World Cup, proving to the world that childhood dreams written on paper, whenever accompanied by hard work, are capable of creating legends on the green rectangle.

Florian Wirtz is preparing with the German national team for an anticipated and strong confrontation against Paraguay, in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, on Monday, June 29, at Gillette Stadium.
