English striker Marcus Rashford joined a historic list in the FIFA World Cup after participating in his country’s first two matches against Croatia and Ghana, in the twelfth group competitions of the 2026 World Cup currently being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Rashford, who spent last season on loan from Manchester United of England to Barcelona of Spain, participated as a substitute against Croatia, and scored a goal to contribute to a major victory for the “Three Lions” with a score of (4-2).

The scenario was repeated against Ghana when England coach Thomas Tuchel decided to include Rashford in place of Arsenal’s English winger Noni Madueke in the 83rd minute, but the German coach did not benefit from him this time as the match ended in a goalless draw.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), on its official website, highlighted Rashford’s participation, noting that he has become the most player in the history of the World Cup to participate as a substitute in 11 matches in three World Cup editions in 2018, 2022 and 2026.
He added that the English international striker is at the top of this historical list with the Brazilian Denilson, who participated in the 1998 and 2002 editions, and they were succeeded by the German Oliver Neufel, who participated as a substitute in 9 matches in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
Spain’s Cesc Fabregas, Germany’s Pierre Littbarski and Brazilian Ramires are equal to the number of 8 substitute appearances in the World Cup.
With 7 alternative entries, the Italian Alessandro Del Piero (1998, 2002 and 2006), the German Mario Gomez (2010 and 2018), the Mexican Javier Hernandez (2010, 2014 and 2018), the Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (2010 and 2014), and the American Coby Jones (1994) are equal on this historical list. 1998 and 2002), Cameroonian Roger Milla (1982, 1990 and 1994), and Swiss Haris Seferovic (2014, 2018 and 2022).
