Canadian Muslims called on the government to combat Islamophobia in the country through comprehensive reforms and concrete measures.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims said – in a statement yesterday, Friday – that the phenomenon of Islamophobia in Canada has become a deep-rooted and systematic problem, and that Canada still records the highest rate of deadly attacks against Muslims among the G7 countries.
The statement stressed the urgent need for government intervention against the escalation of the phenomenon in the country, noting that there are deficiencies in government policies in this regard.
The Council reported that it had prepared a guide on the shortcomings of Ottawa’s policies towards the growth of anti-Islamic hatred.
The statement called on the Canadian government to undertake comprehensive institutional reforms, establish effective accountability mechanisms, and take concrete measures to protect Muslims in Canada.
He pointed out that the attack that targeted a Muslim family in the city of London, Ontario, in 2021, and resulted in the killing of four members of the family; It represents one of the most prominent examples of the escalation of hate crimes against Muslims in the country.
On June 6, 2021, an attacker ran his car over a Muslim family of 5 people who were walking on the sidewalk, killing two women, a man, and a girl, while one family member, a 9-year-old boy, survived, who was seriously injured.
Last February, the Canadian government, headed by Mark Carney, announced the abolition of the positions of Special Representative to Combat “Islamophobia” and Special Envoy to Combat So-Called “Antisemitism,” and merging them into a new advisory council focusing on rights, equality, and inclusion.
