The national teams of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar are engaged in a historic confrontation in the 2026 World Cup, the first between them in the global tournament, after previous meetings were limited to friendly matches only, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Qatar in January 2000, and a 1-1 draw in August 2010.

Bosnia faces an Asian opponent for the second time in the World Cup
The Bosnia and Herzegovina national team is playing this match for the second time against an Asian team in the history of its participation in the World Cup, after its victory over Iran 3-1 in the World Cup in 2014, which is its only victory in the history of its participation in the tournament.
The Bosnian national team also enters the match suffering from a relatively negative streak, as it has not achieved any victory in the last seven international matches (6 draws and one loss), which is the same number of draws that it recorded in the previous 41 matches combined, which reflects a clear shift in the pattern of its results.
On the other hand, the Bosnian team shows a degree of offensive effectiveness, as it succeeded in scoring three or more shots on goal in 13 of the last 15 competitive matches, with an average of up to 25 touches inside the opponent’s penalty area per match, which reflects a continuous offensive presence despite fluctuating results.
Qatar is under pressure from negative numbers
On the other hand, the Qatari team is going through a difficult period at the international level, as it has achieved only one win in the last eight matches (one win, compared to five defeats and two draws), and has only scored three goals during that series.
During the confrontation with Canada in the second round of the World Cup, the Qatari team received 32 shots, one of the highest numbers recorded against any team in the tournament, a number exceeded only by the United States’ match against Belgium in 2014 (40 shots).
Qatar also recorded a possession rate that did not exceed 21% in that match, which is the fifth lowest percentage in the history of the World Cup since 1966, according to Opta statistics, which reflects the great difficulty in imposing the style of play against strong teams.
In the heavy defeat against Canada 6-0, the Qatari team suffered its biggest loss since 2008, when it lost in a friendly match to Iran with a score of 6-1, in one of the most negative defensive matches in its modern history.
Individual indicators are striking
Despite the collective decline, some players stood out on an individual level. In the ranks of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nikola Katic leads the statistics of the second group in aerial duels (12) and bilateral duels (20), in addition to recording the highest number of successful interventions, which makes him one of the most prominent elements of defensive solidity in the tournament.
Substitute Ermin Mahmic also made history by becoming the second player from Bosnia to score a goal as a substitute in the World Cup, after Vedad Ibisevic in the 2014 edition against Argentina.
Opposite goals and fluctuating fortunes
The Qatari team’s matches in the tournament witnessed unusual events, as one of its goals came via an own goal scored by Swiss player Miro Mulheim in the first round, before the Qatari team in turn scored an own goal against Canada via Mohammed Al Mannai in the second round.
