A man in the US with HIV has received lungs from a donor who was HIV positive. The transplant opens up new possibilities for patients with HIV who are waiting for new organs.
The patient, a 56-year-old man, has, according to a press release from the NYU Langone Health Institute in New York, lived with HIV for 20 years. In recent years, he has had greatly reduced lung function as a result of lung disease and was dependent on oxygen.
In March, he received new lungs from a deceased donor who was also HIV positive. In the United States, it is possible to transplant organs from HIV-positive donors to recipients with HIV, within the framework of a research program. In the past, liver and kidney transplants have been carried out with HIV-positive donors, but this is the first time with lungs.
According to Scientific American, the man, who received a new liver at the same time, has been discharged from the hospital.
