The relationship between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to be at a sensitive crossroads, with the Israeli elections approaching next fall, amid growing differences over the management of the war and regional agreements, especially regarding the recent US-Iranian understanding.

Trump has republished a report from the American news website “Just the News” stating that he possesses pressure cards that will influence Netanyahu’s faltering electoral chances, in light of the escalating controversy over the future of American support for him during the next stage, with the Israeli elections scheduled for next fall approaching.

According to the Just The News report, Trump hinted at the possibility of using his political influence to determine his position on supporting Netanyahu, leaving the door open to “multiple options” depending on the course of the next stage, indicating that his support is not automatically guaranteed, but rather is linked to the behavior of the Israeli government and its commitment to the current agreements.

Israel's two far-right ministers, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, called on May 25, 2026, for an escalation of military operations in Lebanon, with one advocating strikes on Beirut in response to Hezbollah's drone attacks. Avoid uncalculated escalation

Trump said in an interview with the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (Kan): “I need to see who is running; I have a good relationship with Bibi, but he needs to be more rational,” adding that he is ready to meet Netanyahu, while praising his performance, but emphasizing the need to control the military rhythm and avoid uncalculated escalation, especially in Lebanon.

According to the site, the data indicate that Trump links his potential support for Netanyahu to the extent of his commitment to the US-Iranian understanding, which Washington considers an essential step to reduce regional escalation and open paths to economic stability, including reducing energy prices and securing sea lanes.

On the other hand, Netanyahu faces internal pressure from his allies on the extreme right, such as Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, who expressed positions rejecting some of the terms of the understandings, especially with regard to the ceasefire and withdrawal from some fronts, which further complicates the political and security scene.

The disagreement is strategic

According to the report, any retreat from commitments or attempts to disrupt the agreements may prompt Trump to re-evaluate his position, and perhaps support potential alternative figures, such as Naftali Bennett or Gadi Eisenkot, if it becomes clear that Netanyahu’s electoral chances are declining or that his policies conflict with the stability goals that Trump seeks.

It seems that the essence of the dispute is not limited to military tactics, but rather extends to the strategic vision for managing the conflict in the region, as Trump prefers quick solutions that reduce civilian casualties and speed up the end of confrontations, while the Israeli government faces internal challenges that limit its ability to fully adhere to any long-term understandings.

In light of this discrepancy, the American support card for Netanyahu remains a decisive factor in the upcoming electoral equation, but it is a card that is conditional – more than ever – on precise political and security behavior, which may redraw the map of alliances in the region in the coming months.
