The official spokesman for the Sudanese police, Brigadier General Fath al-Rahman Muhammad Touf, revealed that the capital, Khartoum, is witnessing intense security activity through a “joint committee” that includes the army, general intelligence, and the police.
Touf told Al Jazeera that these forces carried out more than 86 security operations that resulted in the seizure of quantities of unlicensed weapons, and conducted regular patrols in “fragile areas” to reduce any manifestations of unrest.
He added that the security and criminal situation is witnessing remarkable stability, stressing that some cases of unrest linked to armed elements inside the capital are under control thanks to joint coordination.
The Sudanese police spokesman also indicated that strict controls had been put in place to regulate the movement of military vehicles and armed individuals, stressing that the committee had succeeded in evacuating the capital of irregular military formations, and that the remaining presence of some elements was limited to administrative procedures or to receive treatment.
The joint efforts were not limited to seizing weapons and militants, but also extended to striking drug smuggling and drug trafficking networks. Brigadier General Fath al-Rahman Muhammad Touf reviewed the outcome of the first quarter of this year, which reflects the scale of the confrontation, as more than 1,400 reports were registered in which 1,610 defendants were involved. 700 kilograms of hashish and two kilograms of the deadly drug “ice” were seized, and about 1.2 million narcotic pills were confiscated, in addition to 12 million pills in violation of the pharmacy and poisons law.
In terms of controlling the demographic and security identity of the capital, the security spokesman explained that securing Khartoum is currently based on 8 main crossings that are subject to strict control.
As for the file of illegal foreign presence, according to the spokesman, the authorities carried out more than 456 inspection campaigns to arrest illegal residents, which resulted in the arrest of 16,000 foreigners and refugees violating residency conditions.
Tuf added that the authorities deported 12,000 people to their countries of origin, while about 7,000 refugees were transferred to camps outside the capital, stressing the continuation of campaigns in coordination with the competent authorities and the High Commissioner for Refugees.
The official spokesman concluded his speech by emphasizing that these campaigns are continuing and taking place in full coordination with the competent authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, to ensure the rule of law and restore complete stability to the Sudanese capital and the country’s various states.
